ANNAPURNA TEMPLE : STOLEN TYMPANA

 

CARVED ROOF STRUTS

KATHMANDU, CHUSYA BAHA

Stolen Art : Four carved roof struts.
Date of theft: 10th of January 2001
Location: Inner courtyard, first level (four struts - A,B,C,D - below).
Outer façade, north side, first level (one strut - E - below)
Specifications: Width: 8" Height: 6' (approximate)
Description: The lower part of the niche shows a vidyadhara , a flying warrior, who carries sword and shield in his hands. In the center of the niche is Varuna depicted, one of the guardians of the world.
Building Date: 17th century .
References: As discussed by LOCKE, " Chusya Baha is probably the finest example of Bahal architecture in the Valley" (p.272). Although the present quadrangle's construction can be dated back to 1648 (N.S.769) by a surviving in situ inscription, the carved struts of the baha have been dated to the 14th century by S. B.
