The Medicine Buddha, a bodhisattva, made twelve vows to awaken people's minds, provide for their needs, guide them toward wisdom, and relieve them of physical suffering. After many lives, he attained complete enlightenment and now resides in Vaidryanirbhsa, or "Pure Lapis Lazuli." He is attended by Suyaprabha and Candraprabha. The thanka portrays the Medicine Buddha in a lotus posture, dressed in robes while holding a bowl of medicine nectar and a stem of the Aruna fruit.
